Poetry lovers gathered at the historic Kilmer Mansion on Riverside drive for a meet and greet and book signings to one of Binghamton’s brightest poets.

Timothy Huff, who is a Binghamton native and custom window designer by day, discovered his love for poetry during the early times of the COVID-19 pandemic last spring. Sitting on his back deck of his St. Petersburg home in Florida, Huff would daze at the beauty of nature, looking at the bright colors of spring, and soaking in the fresh scents of freshly planted flowers.

After he was invited to join a Facebook group for Haiku poetry to share with his online friends, he knew he didn’t have to look far for his inspirations. His love for nature and poetry resulted in his first published book, The View from My Deck: Haiku Inspired by Nature.

Huff’s haiku poems in his book delights readers with beautiful imagery of the flowers, birds, sounds, and colors of nature seen on the back deck of his St. Petersburg home.
Huff had a love and appreciation for nature as a young boy growing up in the south side of Binghamton. He remembers the times playing and spending time in the woods as a kid with his siblings and friends, finding peace and joy in being surrounded by nature.

“Growing up in Binghamton, my parents built a house up on the south side near Ross Park Zoo and we had woods behind our house and across the street,” Huff said. “As kids, we played and hung out in those woods all the time, and that really started my love of nature.”

Huff chose the Kilmer Mansion for his book signing to remember his grandfather who used to give piano recitals on the terrace of the mansion. He recently took a tour of the mansion 2 years ago and was amazed by the beauty and structure of the building and thought it to be a perfect location to share his poetry in his hometown.

Huff lives his Florida dream with his husband Randy and their dog Toby. He is currently in the process of releasing a second edition of The View from My Deck but did not disclose a release date.
